NYFW Spring 2015: Katya Leonovich 3D Design Debut

All photos taken by me.

I have never been to a Katya Leonovich show before. However, I know that she always pushes the envelope with her designs. It can be either a hit or miss with her shows, but I will say that as a first time viewer, I enjoyed her show.

Models were strutting down the runway wearing futuristic pieces with the aid of 3D printing. This type of design has been seen in some collections from a small group of avant-garde designers. Nevertheless Leonovich wants to create collections that are wearable and functional. In a press statement Leonovich said, “I wanted to utilize this innovation in a way that would be wearable to the fashion consumer, It is natural for artists to try to take a new technology to the limit when it is first introduced but I see it as a new construction method which is the future for everyday clothes.”

Leonovich collection featured lots of mesh, chiffon and skin. I was a bit surprised that some pieces showed the model’s nipples. I never really seen that on a runway before, but like I wrote before she always pushes the envelope which I admire. Even though some of her designs can be deemed scandalous, it is very possible for it to be wearable by wearing a camisole underneath. In the collection, Leonovich featured two swimsuits to mix it up from the dresses and skirts that were seen on the runway. My favorite piece was the sheer white jumpsuit with a blue 3D design on one side of the strap.

I am very interested to see what she will create for her fall collection next season. What are your thoughts on Katya Leonovich SS15 collection? Would you rock it?
