It’s been a while since I did a beauty post, let alone wrote a review on something; however I will try to include more beauty reviews on my blog. With that said over the last few months, I have been testing out different foundations ranging from stick (ABH and Hourglass) to cream ones (Cover FX). I’m on the hunt for my holy grail foundation, which is why every time a new foundation goes on sale; I’m inclined to either purchase it or get a sample. I rarely buy a foundation without sampling it first (especially if it’s expensive), but once I saw the campaign for the new NYX Total Control Drop foundation, I was intrigued. After I heard almost everybody on Instagram and YouTube rave about it, I had to see what the hype was about. The NYX Total Control foundation is very similar to the Cover FX Custom Cover drops except you don’t have to use it to mix with other foundations and moisturizers; you can use it straight from the bottle. The way this NYX foundation works is that you can have sheer to full coverage depending on how many drops you use. One to two drops = sheer, two to three = medium and four or more = full coverage. In laymen’s terms, you control the coverage you want.
Once I decided that I was going to purchase the foundation, I went over to the NYX website and tried to figure out what my shade is. On the page they have a guide to help customers choose their shade, but it did not help me at all. Thank goodness there’s a NYX store in Union Square, because I know for a fact I would have picked up the wrong shade. I’m still a bit of a noob when it comes to color-matching and I had an employee help me and I bought the shade Cappuccino. Let me tell ya’ll when I got home and started to do my makeup, I knew that I had gotten the wrong shade. It was too light. A few days later I went back to try and exchange the foundation, in which another employee color matched me to the shade Mocha. I’ve been wearing it for almost two weeks now and I definitely can see what the hype is about. It’s a bomb foundation!
- Great coverage.
- Long wearing (after 8 hours, foundation still look good)
- Inexpensive (the foundation retails for $14)
- Has a natural finish, even if you want full coverage
- Doesn’t look cakey
- Good for oily/combo skin (like myself)
- Great shade range (24 shades to be exact) and there’s a good amount of options for WOC
Even though I love this foundation, I still noticed a few flaws:
- Although there’s a lot of options for WOC (more so than a lot of other drugstore foundations), they could add more in between shades with more undertones. For example on the NYX website, it says the shade Mocha is a “deep mocha with olive undertones” when in reality it has a bit of a red undertone.
- It oxides a bit throughout the day
All in all it is a great foundation, especially for the price. However after wearing it for a few weeks, I’ve realized that Mocha is a bit too dark for me since I have a yellow undertone. It would match me better during the summertime, but right now I can’t wear it because it doesn’t match the rest of my body. But I will definitely be picking up Deep Sable (“deep with neutral undertones”) which a few beauty vloggers say is a good match for NC 50 (my MAC shade for reference) skin tones and will update ya’ll on Instagram.
